The cache is close to the McKinney Falls homestead. At one time, there was a small village here and the homestead of Thomas Mckinney, a slave owner, race horse breeder and one of Stephen F. Austin's original colonists. The homestead building was built using slave labor. Also in the park is the remains of a gristmill (N30 11.324 W97 43.170)
NOTE! You will need to cross the creek to get to the Homestead Loop trail. The best crossing is at N30 11.308 W97 43.261. Currently the creek is nearly dry, but after wet weather, it could be wet, slippery, or impassable.
