Anne Bonny
Anne Bonny, AKA Anne Cormac was an Irish American Pirate, famous for raiding the Caribbean for a brief period in the 18th century.
In 1720 Bonny abandoned her husband to sail with the pirate John “calico Jack” Rackham. After commandeering the sloop William with Rackham they began to pirate the area around Jamacia. Bonny did not disguise herself as a man while sailing as a pirate, only when she was pillaging or fighting did Bonny actual disguise herself as a man.
Bonny became associated with another female pirate, Mary Read, who also sailed on the sloop William.
Bonny and Read were the only two members of the pirate crew to actually fight when the sloop was caught by privateer Captain Johnathan Barnet. Upon reaching Spanish Town the pirates were put on trial on convicted of piracy. The male pirates were hung, but Bonny and Read both were pregnant. Read died in prison and Bonny was later released from prison, likely the result of her influential father.
Bonny returned to Charles Town, South Carolina, married and raised her children until her death.
