What did George Washington mean when he said,“I cannot tell a lie.”?
George didn’t mean anything because he never said it.
The myth of the young George Washington and the chairy tree is fake. It was written by a patriot named Parson Weems. Washington died in 1799, and Weems wrote a biography in 1800. The biography was a great success. Weems added the “I cannot tell a lie” story in the 5th edition, published in 1805.
The story was later picked up and used in schoolbooks (such as the famed McGuffy Readers).
It’s still taught to kids. And it’s complete fiction.
