Yamanashi wine has an important history in the Japanese wine industry. Its origins date back to the Meiji period (1868-1912), when the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry encouraged the cultivation of grapes in Katsunuma to promote wine production. 1907 saw the establishment of the Katsunuma Wine Company, and full-scale wine production began in earnest.
After World War II, however, the wine market stagnated due to the influence of the United States. In the 1970s, however, interest in wine grew again, and the Japanese wine industry revived. Katsunuma wines, in particular, worked to improve quality and received high acclaim both in Japan and abroad.
