Of Historic Note:
Local rumor has it that Marshall Junction used to be a
stagecoach stop in the mid to late 1800's. It was established by a
man, Thomas Marshall, from New Jersey who had been working with his
older brother in the mills of the Sacramento, Calaveras, Sonora,
(and more) areas of California.
The younger Marshall got tired of the work and decided that a
stagecoach stop a hundred or so miles south would be an easier way
to make a better living. Marshall Junction was that place.
His older brother, James W. Marshall, continued working in the
mills and was, for a time, the mill boss at a place called Sutter's
Mill. One day while he was working, he saw something shiny in the
water - a gold nugget. ...and the gold rush began.
