On November 5, 1897, the prefecture's first screening of the Great Picture Show (now known as a movie) was held at the Sakuraza theater on Sakuramachi-dori. This was at a time when electric lights were not yet widespread in the city, and even by national standards, it was an early showing among cities of the same size.
The screening of the activity photos was heavily advertised through newspaper ads almost every day during the screening period, The screening was so successful that the originally scheduled one-week showing was extended to 10 days.
Sakura-machi Dori is a different area from the so-called entertainment district, where live jazz clubs and other venues still gather.

明治30（1897）年11月5日、桜町通りの芝居小屋「桜座」で、県内で初めての活動大写真（現在でいう映画）の上映興行が行われました。まだ市内に電灯が普及していないころで、全国的に見ても同じ規模の都市の中では早い時期の上映でした。
活動写真の上映は、新聞広告でほぼ毎日大きく宣伝されたこともあり、上映期間中、連日超満員となる大盛況で、当初は1週間の予定だった上映期間が10日間に延長されたほどでした。
そんな桜町通りは今もジャズのライブハウスなどが集まる、所謂歓楽街とは一味違ったエリアです。
