Geocache Description:

This is a series of caches: just a few minutes from the heart of the European district, you will discover a series of parks and squares, home to numerous architectural treasures in styles such as neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance, and Art Nouveau, all waiting to be discovered.

Water plays a central role in this collection of parks, almost integrated into each one, recreating the historical course of the Maelbeek river.

The Maelbeek stream originates from the south of Brussels, and flowed openly through meadows, passing through 58 ponds. At the time, the European quarter was far from resembling the neighbourhood we know today: the landscape was more like that of a countryside, with the Maelbeek running through this valley, with small farms, mills, and breweries along its banks.

When urbanization started, however, the stream caused floods and posed public health risks: while mostly underground today, the Maelbeek is not forgotten, and it even lends its name to the nearby metro station.

So, let yourself be carried along the Maelbeek valley, following in the footsteps of great architects during a stroll through this eclectic district. As you explore hidden treasures and remarkable facades that make Art Nouveau a gem of Brussels' heritage, you can look for some geocaches along the way!

Le Jardin de la vallée du Maelbeek, or Maalbeekdaltuin, holds significant historical and urban planning importance. Its inauguration took place on October 17, 2001, marking a testament to the residents’ struggle against the rapid urbanization of the neighbourhood (Brusselization) which lacked proper urban planning and green spaces.

Initially designated to host the new headquarters of the Council of the European Union, the park's location faced opposition from local neighbourhood associations. The government eventually changed the project's course and the area, previously used as a parking lot, became a green space (the Council of the European is now on the opposite side of Rue de la Loi).

Within the park, a small miniature river symbolizes the Maelbeek stream that once flowed openly here.
