Disc Golf was invented in 1927 in Bladworth Saskatchewan, Canada when four elementary school buddies threw tin-lids into circle drawn onto the floor.
In 1975 Disc Golf became mainstream thanks to “steady" Ed Headrick who created the official rules, formed the official disc golf association, a pro league, and the first formal chain and basket which was a new and improved pole hole. In 1979, Ed's worked with Wham-O and they sponsored a competition with a $50,000 cash prize.
Disc Golf returns to the Competition Program at The World Games in Chengdu 2025, for the first time since 2001.
There are competitions, with prize money and apps with leaderboards to track progress on the different courses. Virginia has 217 courses, and the Northern Virginia area has several well-maintained courses. On the grounds of former DC Jail, Giles Run at Laurel Hill Park was established in 2007. The course has 18 holes with concrete tees and Mach III targets and two levels of play. On over 53 acres, players are expected to walk ~3 miles. They average 1.5 to 2.5 hours on the course.
We are elevating the game further by integrating the discs into a geocache. To find out how, take a short walk along a paved trail and then onto a grass pathway. The view overlooking Lorton Road provides an interesting perspective of the area.
Approved by Fairfax County Park Manager. Parks are open from Dawn to Dusk. Night Caching in Park Authority parks is expressly forbidden.
