Description:

Welcome to the Willow River Falls Earthcache, where you will embark on a geological journey through time to understand the formation and transformation of the spectacular Willow River Falls. Situated within the scenic Willow River State Park, these falls offer not only breathtaking beauty but also a fascinating geological history waiting to be explored.

Geological Background:

Willow River Falls are a prime example of the power of water and geological processes at work. The story begins nearly 1.2 billion years ago when the rocks that now form this region were created deep beneath the Earth's surface. These rocks, primarily composed of ancient Precambrian basalt and sandstone, provide the foundation for the falls' formation.

Formation of the Falls:

The main geological process responsible for the formation of Willow River Falls is erosion. Over millions of years, the Willow River carved its way through layers of rock, creating a deep, narrow gorge that we see today. This gorge is primarily composed of the resistant basalt that has withstood the erosive forces of the river, while the softer sandstone layers have eroded more quickly, forming the unique characteristics of the falls.
