Geocache Description:

You will have to travel by water to reach this geocache, but exploring and new adventures are what it’s all about.

Why “The Waterfall”? Legend has it there was a treasure hidden on the Island under the waterfall. It was never found (the treasure or the waterfall) but you can find a treasure in this geocache!

Note: Visitors are only allowed on the state park property. It is open from 8 AM to sunset. Park and camping information can be found on the MD Department of Natural Resources website: https://dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/Pages/central/hartmiller.aspx

A boat is NEEDED for this Geocache. Boat access is through Hart-Miller Island State Park.(GPS Coordinates: 39.252790, -76.372469) The difficulty of the cache on the island is 1.5 and can be found in about 15 mins. Bring your binoculars as you may see migrating shorebirds, osprey, bald eagles, and more along the 3,000 ft beach constructed between the Hart and Miller Island remnants to form Hart-Miller Island State Park. Or you can climb the observation tower to get a better view of the restored wildlife habitat area of the Hart-Miller Island

Hart-Miller Island was initially constructed in 1981 with 6,000 feet of dike enclosing 1100 acres providing placement capacity for material dredged from channels leading to the Port of Baltimore through 2009.  The Island is now in its final habitat restoration phase.

  •  The Maryland Port Administration is the largest creator of wetland habitat in Maryland.
  • 300 acres on the island have been restored into uplands, mudflats, shallow wetlands, and open water to create nesting and feeding habitat for shore birds, terns, and waterfowl.
  • 800 acres are in their final planning stage for habitat development.

Do NOT try to climb over the fence into the dredged material facility portion of Hart-Miller Island. This area only accepts visitors through pre-scheduled tours. Information on tours of Hart-Miller Island can be found here: https://mpa.maryland.gov/greenport/Pages/tours.aspx.
