Marathos
The mountainous Marathos village of the Malevizi municipality is about 20 kilometers from Heraklion and 300 meters above the sea level. The Marathianos River runs nearby and flows down to Fodele. The name of the settlement is pre-Hellenic and comes from the fennel plant.
Enjoy a walk to the picturesque alleys of the village.
On the main road there is a war monument commemorating the many battles on the island of Crete. It was built by the sculptor Yanni Klinakis.
If you follow the main road via Heraklion you will also find a very good traditional Taverna with authentic cretan food.
Make cache not war!
