Welcome to an United States Official Monarch Way Station!!!
The South End Butterfly Sanctuary (SEBS) mission is to maintain a Monarch Butterfly Way Station and offer ecology opportunities to inspire and encourage Albany's urban residents' interest in pollinators and ecological stewardship.

In 2020, this ecological site was created from an empty lot by a 13-year-old resident who wanted to make a difference in her community. To learn more about the wonderful efforts and events this sanctaury is making, please visit our FACEBOOK page. We hope you enjoy this cache and spend a few minutes looking around. There are natural "treasures" all over. BONUS- Walk along Eagle Street about 20 feet to discover a huge mural. Thank you for visiting!
300 HUNDRED YEARS AGO…
this site was a meadow filled with natural and native grasses and flowers. For a few weeks every August, hundreds of orange and black butterflies called “monarchs” would visit. They would feed on flower nectar, lay eggs, and the young caterpillars would feed on milkweeds. Once the wings became dry, they would flutter to flowers and branches covering everything in sight with orange and black beauty. Imagine what that would have looked like!
