The Lockyer Valley Region is the land of the Yuggera and Ugarapul people, who are acknowledged as the Traditional Custodians of the region.
It is also a local government area in the West Moreton region of South East Queensland, between the cities of Ipswich and Toowoomba. It was created in 2008 from a merger of the Shire of Gatton and the Shire of Laidley.
The Lockyer Creek is a major drainage system in the Lockyer Valley and covers nearly one-quarter of the total catchment area of the Brisbane River. Major towns along the creek are Helidon, Grantham, and Gatton, The creek is named after Edmund Lockyer who explored the area in 1825.
On 28 September 2011, the 85 km stretch of the Warrego Highway from Riverview to the bottom of the Toowoomba Range at Withcott was renamed Darren Lockyer Way, in honour of the retired Brisbane Broncos, Queensland and Australian rugby league captain.
