Starbeck reputedly takes its name from the 'Star Beck' which flows into the Crimple Beck, a tributary of the Nidd.
Starbeck was originally a hamlet in the township of Bilton with Harrogate in the ancient parish of Knaresborough. The township was part of the ancient Royal Forest of Knaresborough, which is situated to the south of the River Nidd. In 1896 Starbeck became a separate civil parish, but in 1938 the civil parish was abolished and Starbeck was absorbed into the Municipal Borough of Harrogate.

The Starbeck Saunter series is a trail of 13 caches (12 traditional and 1 multi) which tours the north-eastern side of Starbeck. Beginning in Bilton, the first 6 caches are along the Nidderdale Greenway, a long stretch of footpath which connects Ripley and Starbeck. The next few caches are in the heart of the town, as you walk down the A59. At cache 13, the trail takes you back around to the starting point, completing the series.
Parking is available at cache 1, with space for 10-12 cars. It's free to park here but please be considerate when doing so. Be careful when walking along the main road between caches 9 and 10. Some caches are hidden behind or under other objects so if you find a cache like this, please replace it how you found it. If you find a cache where you don't think it is meant to be hidden, please replace it in the correct location. I hope you enjoy this series and happy caching!
