The Peace Bell
You're probably wondering why there is a bell under the roof in such a place?
In 1989, the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki gifted Warsaw with a present known as the 'Bell of Peace'. This bell symbolizes similar experiences of catastrophic destruction in cities during World War II.
The bell was made in Japan and, interestingly, was cast from coins collected from various countries around the world. The gift is a replica of the bell in Hiroshima.
Until 2002, the bell was located at 55 Bukowińska Street (corner of Domaniewska Street), but one day it was stolen by a group of unknown men. To this day, the item has not been found. Only in 2015 did a replica of the original bell stand here, at 15 Jana Sebastiana Bacha Street.
During the heyday of the original gift from Japan, it was a tradition to ring the bell twice a year - on the International Day of Peace (the 3rd Tuesday of September) and the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II (September 1). Today, it is an integral part of the Dolinka Służewiecka Park and a great attraction at the annual Japanese culture picnic, Matsuri.
