GeocachingNSW would like to extend an invitation to all Geocachers to come together and celebrate a very special milestone.
"GCHFT2 Earthcache I - A simple geology tour of Wasp Head" was the very first earthcache ever created anywhere in the world and it's celebrating 20 years of geological discovery on the 10th January, 2024. Here is your chance to celebrate this remarkable achievement and to discover for yourself the wonders of this unique environment. Here is a link.......
GCHFT2 Earthcache I
The Wasp Head Earthcache is located at South Durras on the NSW south coast. It is about 20km north of Batemans Bay. From Sydney, it is a pleasant 3¾ hour drive and just over 2 hours from Canberra so it is well within the reach of many geocachers.
The event, to be held on Saturday, 13th January, 2024, is a “BYO everything” Meet’n’Greet activity commencing at 3pm. This will give those that need to travel some distance a chance to attend as well as grabbing a few hides along the way. There is public car parking available, (see the additional waypoint) then it’s just a short stroll up the beach to the event coordinates. The nearby resort has takeaway food, drinks and coffee available during the day.
There is plenty of accommodation in and around the Batemans Bay area however this may be difficult to secure as it is school holiday time and the south coast of NSW is a very popular holiday destination. If you need accommodation, we would suggest you book as early as possible.
Events are a great way to meet new people and make new friends with a common interest, pick up the latest information on equipment, techniques and software and share stories about the latest caching adventure. You may even pick up a hint or two on those pesky DNFs.
Please post a “Will Attend” log and add this event to your watchlist so that you will receive any announcements that are made. If you have any questions, please contact us at contact@geocachingnsw.asn.au
We are looking forward to a beautiful day and a large turnout to help celebrate this milestone of a very special Earthcache.
Cheers,
GeocachingNSW Committee

Dear friends
I am so honored that you have gathered to celebrate the placing of the
first EarthCache and wish I could be there to celebrate with you.
Who would have known that this seed of an idea would sprout into being a
huge phenomenon around the globe with thousands of EarthCaches in every
country and some even on Antarctica. Since placing this one - and to
this date I think its one of the best - I placed two more in Australia
before moving to the USA. Wishin six months the concept had taken off,
and with the generous support of Geocaching.com, we have ended up with a
unique cache type that has been visited by millions of people each and
every year.
I am very proud of what I have added to the game. I am equally proud
that that an Australian came up with the idea, worked behind the scenes
and reviewed so many to get the concept started.
Once an Aussie - always an Aussie!
Cheers to you all! Happy Caching…and I hope I get to meet some of you
on a caching trip in the future.
