The cache site is in a public viewing area. Enjoy the view of the dam. Please be aware that this cache site is not suitable for small children.
The John Day Dam is located at the head of Lake Celilo, 216 miles upstream from the mouth of the Columbia River. The dam crosses the river near Rufus, Oregon, about 25 miles upstream from The Dalles, Oregon, just below the mouth of the John Day River.
Construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1971, at a total cost of $511 million dollars. At the time of its completion, John Day Dam Powerhouse was the second largest powerhouse in the world.
The view from the cache site will allow you to look at the navigation lock, spillway, powerhouse and fish passage facilities on both shores of the Columbia River.
The lake behind the dam is known as Lake Umatilla and it spans approximately 76 miles upstream to the McNary Dam. There are many recreational facilities located in this upper lake.
The first of 16 main generators in the powerhouse began operation in 1968; the last generator to come on line was in 1971. At peak times the powerhouse is capable of producing 2.2 million kilowatts of power, enough to meet the electrical needs of two cities the size of Seattle, Washington.
Electricity produced by the Corp’s 21 hydroelectric projects in the Pacific Northwest accounts for 40 percent of all electric energy requirements in the region.
Enjoy the view! Again, please be aware that this cache site is not suitable for small children. There are extreme drop offs and high winds that are possible. Have fun and be safe. Happy caching.
