Geocache Description:

V bližini so leta 1981 postavili še spomenik slovenskemu narodnemu heroju Edvardu Kardelju (1910-1979).

The Republic Square (formerly known as Revolution Square from 1974-91) is the largest square and market in Ljubljana, situated west of the old city center and east of Tivoli Park. For many years, it served as a public parking lot, but after the renovation completed in 2014, the square was restored as the main city and state square, representing the heart of Slovenian statehood.

Numerous historical events have taken place on the vast platform in the center of the square. Among them, on June 25, 1991, the first President of the Republic of Slovenia, Milan Kučan, declared Slovenia's independence, and the new flag of Slovenia was publicly raised for the first time. This day is now a national holiday, and a ceremony commemorating the anniversary takes place in the square every year.

The square is an outstanding example of socialist modernist architecture. It was designed in 1960 by Edvard Ravnikar, a disciple of Plečnik, as the center of modern Ljubljana, on the site previously occupied by the extensive gardens of the Ursuline Monastery. A group of architects, under his guidance, worked on the square between 1962 and 1982.

The square is surrounded by the building of the Slovenian Parliament, the somewhat futuristic triangular towers TR3, and the Ljubljana Bank with Cankarjev Dom in the background, as well as the Maximarket department store building.

On the square, there are also several monuments from the time of socialist Yugoslavia. The largest is the Monument of Revolution, a work by sculptor Drago Tršar and architect Vladimir Braco Mušič, unveiled on May 9, 1975. The large bronze sculpture still ranks among the largest public sculptures in the country. The monument weighs 19 tons and consists of geometric planes, verticals, and triangles. According to the sculptor, the composition represents a sequence of gathering, struggle, and revolutionary victory.

Nearby, in 1981, another monument was erected in honor of the Slovenian national hero Edvard Kardelj (1910-1979). The bronze sculpture of Kardelj standing at the head of a group of people on a low-tiered platform is the work of sculptor Drago Tršar and architect Fedja Košir.

Another significant monument is located in front of Cankarjev Dom, erected in 1982 in honor of the greatest Slovenian writer and playwright Ivan Cankar (1876-1918). The monument is composed of lamellas, measuring 3.3 meters in height and 2.6 meters in width and depth. In addition to Cankar's face, his signature, and a handwritten quote are visible: "My work is the intuition of dawn."
