Opposite the Windmill Centre is the Rārākau Riccarton Centre which opened in December 2019. The new building replaces the former Riccarton Community Centre which was the Town Hall for the Riccarton Borough Council. The Riccarton Borough Council was merged by Christchurch City Council in October 1989. The old building was damaged in the 2010/11 earthquakes and was sited on the area adjacent to the Westfield Parking building. Rārākau is located on the site of the former Robbies Restaurant. The Robbies Restaurant building was where Riccarton Borough Council staff worked from.
The new building was designed to reflect the natural environment of Riccarton Bush. This includes the plantings and the use of wood throughout the building.
I have placed this, as my first cache around the outside of the building and is in a very busy location. Watch out for people using the community centre. Council staff know about the placement. BYOP - room only for signing. Please seal the ziploc bag.
