Pavia è stata la capitale del Regno Longobardo per quasi due secoli: dal 625 al 774. Le prerogative di capitale e la presenza dei sovrani che vi risiedevano influenzarono profondamente le vicende urbanistiche, ecclesiastiche e culturali della città durante tutto l’alto medioevo.
I re Clefi, Autari, Agilulfo, Rotari e Ariperto promossero la costruzione di numerose e celebri basiliche cattoliche; purtroppo la maggior parte degli edifici, eretti tra il VII e l’VIII secolo è andata perduta o ha subito radicali trasformazioni e di alcuni non è possibile neppure localizzare l’ubicazione.
Il principale edificio religioso pavese è la chiesa di Sant’Eusebio, costruita come cattedrale ariana da Rotari e in seguito fulcro della conversione al cattolicesimo avviata da Teodolinda e sostenuta da re Ariperto I (653- 661) e dal vescovo Anastasio. Del VII secolo resta la cripta, con capitelli originali. Pochi i resti della basilica di San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro, edificata da Liutprando per accogliere le spoglie di S. Agostino provenienti dalla Sardegna, e completamente ricostruita alla fine del XII secolo.

Pavia was the capital of the Lombard Kingdom for almost two centuries: from 625 to 774. The prerogatives of the capital and the presence of the sovereigns who resided there profoundly influenced the urban, ecclesiastical and cultural events of the city throughout the early Middle Ages.
The kings Clefi, Autari, Agilulf, Rotari and Ariperto promoted the construction of numerous and famous Catholic basilicas; Unfortunately, most of the buildings, erected between the 7th and 8th centuries, have been lost or have undergone radical transformations and it is not even possible to locate the location of some.
The main religious building in Pavia is the church of Sant'Eusebio, built as an Arian cathedral by Rotari and later the fulcrum of the conversion to Catholicism initiated by Theodelinda and supported by King Ariperto I (653-661) and Bishop Anastasius. The crypt remains from the 7th century, with original capitals. There are few remains of the basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, built by Liutprando to house the remains of St. Augustine from Sardinia, and completely rebuilt at the end of the 12th century.
