Abseits der modernen Straßen sind die alten Verbindungen vielfach in Vergessenheit geraten. Am alten Steinegger Weg findet man stellenweise noch Bauten der Vergangenheit, als hier durch den dunklen Wald am Schattenhang ein Fuhrweg empor führte. Schon nach Halbweg, auf etwa 650 Meter Meereshöhe befindet sich der Mortner Gufl.
Das Wort "Gufl" bedeutet Höhle bzw. Felsüberhang und ist vom rom. Cubulu = Höhle abgeleitet. Mit diesem Namen wird auch diese Wohnhöhle bezeichnet. Die Höhle hat als Dach eine riesige Felsplatte und als Wände ebenfalls riesige Steine.
Den Erzählungen nach haben hier vor hundert Jahren Zigeuner gewohnt. Unter anderem soll auch ein Zigeunerkind in der Mortner Gufl geboren worden sein. Auch von einem Einsiedler (Mortner-Hias), der hier gelebt haben soll, wird erzählt. Während des 2. Weltkriegs wurde der Ort als Luftschuftschuztkeller für die Bewohner des nahe liegenden Mortner Hofes benutzt, davon zeugen noch einige Mauerreste.

Lontano dalle strade moderne, i vecchi collegamenti sono stati spesso dimenticati. Sul vecchio "Steinegger Weg" (verso Collepietra) si trovano ancora costruzioni del passato, quando una carrareccia saliva attraverso la foresta scura sul pendio ombroso. Poco dopo la metà del percorso, a circa 650 metri sul livello del mare, si trova il Mortner Gufl.
La parola "Gufl" significa grotta o sporgenza rocciosa e deriva dal termine romano cubulu = grotta. Questo nome viene utilizzato anche per descrivere questa grotta residenziale. La grotta ha un'enorme lastra di roccia come tetto e enormi pietre come pareti.
Secondo le storie, un centinaio di anni fa qui vivevano gli zingari. Tra l'altro, si dice che un bambino zingaro sia nato nel Mortner Gufl. Si racconta anche di un eremita (Mortner-Hias) che viveva qui. Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, il luogo fu utilizzato come rifugio antiaereo per gli abitanti del vicino Mortner Hof, come testimoniano ancora alcuni resti delle mura.

Away from the modern roads, the old connections have often been forgotten. On the old Steinegger Weg you can still find buildings from the past, when a cart track led up through the dark forest on the shadowy slope. Just after halfway, at about 650 metres above sea level, you will find the Mortner Gufl.
The word "Gufl" means cave or rock overhang and is derived from the Roman word cubulu = cave. This name is also used to describe this residential cave. The cave has a huge rock slab as a roof and huge stones as walls.
According to stories, gypsies lived here a hundred years ago. Among others, a gypsy child is said to have been born in the Mortner Gufl. There are also stories of a hermit (Mortner-Hias) who lived here. During the Second World War, the place was used as an air-raid shelter for the inhabitants of the nearby Mortner Hof, of which some remains of the walls still bear witness.
