Gustin - a Michigan Lost Town

The former village of Gustin is another example of a Michigan Lost Town.

The village of Gustin sprouted when the Detroit, Bay City & Alpena Railroad extended its line from what became known as Lincoln Junction, north through Mikado and Lincoln, in 1885.  The line was extended to Black River through the purchase of the Black River Railroad, which ran from Hawes, north-north-east.

With nearby Harrisvile growing in leaps and bounds, in 1901, the railroad, then known as the Detroit & Macinac, realligned their mainline through Harrisville.  That left the line through Gustin as a little used branch.  It was abandoned by the railroad in 1928.

Without several trains a day, Gustin began to slip into the rural oblivion that you see today.  Just a hand full of farm houses and an old barn style building that probably once had access to the railroad.
