Geocache Description:

Congratulations to icezebra11 on his FTF

Our black Labrador puppy Chimborazo turned 6 years old today!  He and his older sister Orizaba, an 11-year old yellow Lab, are my frequent companions on geocaching hikes and have become known to a bunch of NOCO geocachers because they have sometimes attended events with me or have joined in hikes involving some of you.

Chimi is named after the highest peak in Ecuador, where Chimborazo soars to an elevation of 20,548 feet above mean sea level. But when considering the bulge of the Earth near the equator, the mountain is the highest in the world when measured from the Earth’s center–a half-mile higher than Mt. Everest!  But that doesn’t count!  This distinction does, however, highlight the importance of map datums, since each datum represents a different model of various representations of the shape of our planet.  And map datums can be used for interesting Geocaching mystery caches and navigational challenges for us. The name Chimborazo means “on the other side”, in this case probably referring to “snow on the other side”. The top of Chimborazo is ice-capped, covered with glaciers–unusual for mountains within 1 degree Latitude of the Equator!

My wife, Denali50, takes responsibility for naming all of our family pets, and invariably chooses names for our dogs after mountains that I’ve climbed.  Chimborazo was a special one for me, and Chimborazo our dog is particularly special.  On this, his sixth birthday, I took Chimi and his sister on a hike up the main trail in Hewlett Gulch. It's their favorite hiking trail. There is no requirement that dogs be leashed!  And there are always quite a few other dogs for them to meet and greet. I own quite a few caches along the main trail and the loop, and am always alert to new locations that would serve as another cache host. Today I stopped at the one that’s seemed most attractive over the past few hikes and hid the micro that serves as this cache.

To find the cache you will need to assemble the jig saw puzzle made from the photo; it was taken today of Chimborazo. Click on the link and work your way through the Jigidi jig saw. When you place the last piece in, you will be rewarded with a message that provides the cache’s coordinates and details of the hide.  Have fun.  It will take a while to complete the puzzle.  Once you have the information take the nice hike along the gentle trail to the cache location. Take your version of Chimborazo if you have a dog! He or she is guaranteed to have a fun time with you.  Expect a round trip hike of less than 3 miles.  Take water and a snack and enjoy your time on the trail.  You will need a writing device to sign the cache log.

To prevent your work on the puzzle from being deleted in the event of a computer disruption, you should sign up as a Jigidi member and make certain you are activated when you start the puzzle.  It is free.
