This trail is the south half of Salmon Woods Open Space. The trail is separated by a neighborhood street, Toledo St. The south trail is very different from the north trail. Where the north trail is wide, ADA/stroller accessible, and graded, the south trail is narrow, not AFDA/stroller accessible. The trail is considered unpaved (ungroomed) with a moderate rating. The trail enjoys rough terrain - rocks, roots, and fallen trees; great for an easy to moderate workout. The sounds of the creek/stream and birds calls can be heard throughout the forest. The trail is suitable for hiking, biking, dog walking in an environment "wilder" than its northern section. Wonderful area for coming with nature while hunting the elusive cache.
So how does one actually get to the south portion of Salmon Woods Open Space? By vehicle go to Old Lakeway Dr and search for street parking, or use the parking lot at the Civic Field Complex. The trail may also be reached by bus. Exit at Undine and use the HAWK pedestrian crosswalk. There is also a bus returning to Downtown Bellingham on the north side of Lakeway. If parking at Civic Field lot, proceed to Gladstone, then to Toledo St.
