Geocache Description:

This is a 1L container Letterbox cache at the posted co-ordinates.  As it is a letterbox, please remember that the rubber stamp is not a trade item, it is intended to stay within the cache.

When letterboxers find the container, they stamp the logbook with their personal stamp, and also stamp their own notebook with the stamp from the letterbox as a souvenir of their visit. The stamp and logbook remain in the letterbox for the next visitor to use.

The stamp has been hand carved to celebrate our Mascot - the Toroa.

The magnificent Toroa

Along with the wandering albatross, northern royal albatross are one of the largest seabirds in the world.

There are two species of royal albatross, southern and northern. The southern is slightly larger than the northern. At sea it can be distinguished from the northern by its white upper wings with black edges and tips, whereas the upper wings of the northern are completely black.

Royal albatrosses are some of the longest-lived birds in the world, regularly living into their 40s.

Albatrosses are the world's largest flying seabirds. They spend at least 85% of their lives at sea returning to land (usually remote islands) to breed and raise their young.

Until recently scientists recognised 14 different species of albatrosses, but new research using DNA technology has confirmed as many as 24.

Thirteen varieties breed in the New Zealand region – more than anywhere else in the world. Several are extremely rare, like the Antipodean albatross which breed in the sub Antarctic Island of Antipodes.
