Enjoy your walk along the Airlie Beach foreshore and find the dugongs.
The dugong is a large herbivorous marine mammal and is currently an endangered species. They can be spotted around the Whitsunday islands, although they are shy and try to avoid boats and people. Their main habitat is grassy sea beds in shallow water, eating about 30kg daily. Dugongs can reach a length of 3m and communicate with each other by chirps. They have poor eyesight so rely on sensitive bristles on the upper lip of their snouts to find and grasp the sea grass. Dugongs can live for more than 70 years and are protected in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It has also been thought that the myth of the mermaid was from mariners mistaking a dugong for an aquatic female.
If you arrive by car, you can park near the Lagoon. If you arrive by boat, you can tie your tender up at the sailing club dinghy dock and walk along the esplanade.
You are looking for a small tube container under a rock. Look for the white one in front of the dugong - reach in to the right.
This is a high muggle zone and can be very busy at times - beware the proximity of scantily clad backpackers on sunny days.
Enjoy the view across Airlie Bay where you can catch a glimpse of some of the Whitsunday Islands.
