Geocache Description:

14 November 2023, 18:15 - 19:45

Taco Tuesday has been around for as long as any of us can remember, but did you know that until recently it was illegal to use that phrase if you were in the business of selling or promoting tacos? Since 1989, an East Coast chain called Taco John's somehow managed to trademark "Taco Tuesday" in 49 states - even though they only did business in 23 states. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Gregory's Resaurant & Bar held the trademark in that state since 1982. This legal reality seems stupid in southern California, where the term has been in regular use for as long as any of us can remember. The earliest local advertising references found date back to 1933, and it probably goes back farther than that!

But that's all over. Taco Tuesday has been freed. Anyone can use it once again. On July 18, 2023, Taco John's settled the trademark dispute in their 49-state "jurisdiction" (weird, they only sell in 23). Meanwhile, Gregory's only relinquished their New Jersey trademark on October 24, 2023 -- less than a week before you're reading this.

Who do we have to thank for this? Taco Bell. They sued to release the trademark, rightly saying it was in the public domain all along. They have no plans to own the term -- the terms of the settlement prohibit that.

Having said all that, we will be celebrating at our usual Taco Tuesday haunt, Ranch Enchilada. It's the same place with a nice outdoor patio out back where we can gather and make noise without overwhelming the patrons inside. The same place I've patronized since I settled in Yorba Linda in 2000 just after geocaching itself was born.

It may be chilly out there in mid November, so bring a jacket. (But this isn't New Jersey, so a light jacket will do!)

As ever, the coordinates should get you there. You can also find it using the Three Words awakes.crazy.spirit. If you want the address you'll find us at 4965 Valley View Ave, Yorba Linda, Ca. Parking density can vary depending on how busy it is. Remember that there are a few parallel spots on the street that aren't much farther away than those in the lot.
