東海知多線は都市計画道路です。
都市計画道路とは道路は主要な交通施設として、安全にかつ快適な交通を確保するとともに、都市の骨格をなす施設として、健全な市街地の形成及び活力と魅力ある都市形成に寄与しています。そして、併せて防災上の役割を果たし、供給処理施設（上下水道、ガス、電気等）の収容を図るなど多面的な機能を有する、都市の基盤的な施設です。これを都市計画法に基づき、都市計画決定したものとなります。
