This location has been a popular spot for people to watch sea lions with their pups, however the numbers of pups and of people here increased over the years. So in order to provide a more secure site for members of the public to view the nursery, in 2023 the Department of Conservation fenced off this area near the edge of the inlet where sea lion pups gather while their parents are out at sea catching food. You can often spot pups playing in a pool here.
Please take care when driving along this road: last year, two pups were killed when they were hit by cars while they were crossing the road. Be mindful that you are sharing the road with other road-users, pedestrians and sea lions.
Bring your own pen to sign the logbook and do exercise stealth, especially in the busy months when there will inevitably be a number of muggles about.
