Geocache Description:

The Chaînage

In the past, manually controlled instruments were used to measure distances and angles. The surveyor's chain, introduced in 1620, is about 20 m (66 ft) long and consists of 100 links. It was used as a standard for many surveys in Canada, such as the survey of federal lands, until it was replaced by steel ribbons.

Distance was also determined using telescopic sighting devices (e.g. tachometers) and optical devices (e.g. telemeter). Angles were measured using the theodolite and tacheometer, telescope-type devices used to accurately determine the angle formed by two targets. Astronomical observations and the compass were used to determine location and magnetic bearing, while levels and barometers were used to take  vertical measurements.

In surveying, we sometimes use a reference line. A road, will therefore have a start chain (always 0) and an end chain representing its length. Thus, the chaining value of a point can be extrapolated precisely to this point. The linear reference method is applied both in the field by different benchmarks and for the management of the digital data of the associated road assets.

Reference Line:

Lexicon:

Long: is the distance from the start point to the coordinate on the reference line.

Trans: is the distance between the reference line and the distance perpendicular to the left or right of the line. On the left the number will be negative and on the right it will be positive.

Polar: is the shortest distance between the starting point and the coordinate.

When building a road, an imaginary line represents the reference line of the road. The beginning of the road will be represented by the +0.00 chain and the measurements along this road will increase. The coordinate at 23.75 meters on this road will be represented by +23.75 on the chain. If our reference line is in the center of the road and we want to know the coordinate on the edge of the road on the left 24 meters from the beginning of a 14 meter wide road,  we will have the +24.00 chain and a -7.00 trans.

Here, to find where the geocache is, you will need to find the beginning of the bike path to the west that crosses the cities or boroughs of Senneville, St-Anne-de-Bellevue, Kirkland and Dollard-des-Ormeaux and is usually under the power line. The container is at +6,00 on the chain and +8,00 on the trans.
