As a recent transplant from the North (Carolina, and the Midwest before that), I'm saddened by the lack of snow in my new home.  It's a rare enough occurence in Florida to warrant national media attention when it does happen.  The last time Orange County had snow was January 2010.  Closer to the coasts, cold air moving over warmer water can cause snowfall- typically known as lake-effect snow where i'm from, but can apply to salt water as ocean-effect snow.  Jacksonville got such a snowfall in 2015.  n28 33.275

The Panhandle seems to get more snow than the rest of the state (which tracks, being the northernmost part of the state).  The Panhandle was forecast over an inch of snow the January 2014.  The earliest recorded snow in Florida was all the way back in 1765.  A particularly notable snowfall was the Great Blizzard of 1899, leading to a snowball fight on the steps of the Florida State Capitol in Tallahasee.
