The Daguan Wetlands Park is surrounded by an eclectic mix of land uses. To the south and east are the sleek new office parks and campuses of a range of technology companies. To the west across the highway and new elevated expressway is a massive bus depot, the Xintang Overseas Chinese Cemetery and a couple of large animal related laboratories, (广东省实验动物监测所 and 广东省大动物模型研究中心).
The state-owned Xintang Overseas Chinese Cemetery was established in 1963. China Permanent Cemetery was established in 1988 and is a wholly state-owned enterprise. (Like the cemetery, the cache is discreet but in plain sight.) Together the two cemeteries cover a sprawling 250 hectares, and 'meet the long-cherished wishes of compatriots and overseas Chinese at home and abroad to "return to their roots and bless future generations"'.
The main bus depot building, with multi-storey bus parking, was built immediately north of the cemetery in 2019 and opened in 2020 just as bus ridership plunged due to Covid restrictions. The restrictions have now long gone but the bus ridership is yet to recover.
