Geocache Description:

A two-part multi-cache.

From Wikipedia:

Pink Floyd, one of the most successful and influential groups ever, formed in the 1960s when Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright were studying at college in London. "Another Brick in the Wall" is a three-part composition on Pink Floyd's 1979 rock opera The Wall, written by bassist Roger Waters. "Part 2", a protest song against corporal punishment and rigid and abusive schooling, features a children's choir.

From the web page, https://www.summerhillschool.co.uk/a-s-neill

A.S. Neill, a Scottish writer and rebel, was born... on 17th October 1883. That somebody of his generation could not only cross the divide between generations, but could also be a leader in a most modern approach to children and childhood, is extraordinary.

He created a community in which children could be free from adult authority. The school and his ideas became world-famous through Neill's writings and lectures, his books are still read worldwide. In the late 60’s Neill's success at Summerhill was finally recognised and he was awarded honorary degrees from the universities of Newcastle, Exeter and Essex. He was also recognised amongst the top 12 men and women who have influenced British schooling during the last millennium by the Times Educational Supplement (31.12.1999)

"In the current educational climate in which pupils have little or no control over the running of their schools and certainly no control over what they learn, the public good can only profit from exposure to alternative philosophies. Neill's has stood the test of time far longer than any other educational philosophy or initiative, whether radical or mainstream."
Dr Alan Thomas Visiting Fellow University of London Institute of Education.

From Wikipedia

Beneath the Wheel (Unterm Rad) is a 1906 novel written by Hermann Hesse. ... It severely criticizes education that focuses only on students' academic performance, and in that respect is typical of Hesse. There are also autobiographical elements in the story, as he attended and was expelled from the seminary described.[1] ... Beneath the Wheel is the story of Hans Giebenrath.... His education is focused completely on increasing his knowledge, and neglects personal development.

************************

Waters, Neill and Hesse have in common that they themselves, as themselves, attest to the human spirit surviving education as imposed. The decision to place a cache here and give it this name has taken me back in time, first to Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall, then to Neill's book Summerhill, and to Hesse's Beneath the Wheel, all of which I came across as I endured high school.

Enjoy the cache.
