Fun info you probably don’t need to know……

  • A person born on leap day, February 29th is often referred to as a “leapling” or “leaper”. Leaplings celebrate their birthdays once every four years, so they age at a quarter of the pace as regular folks . Unlucky? Lucky? – you decide

  • Leap years are all about the sun as it takes the Earth around 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds to circle once around the sun.

  • Apparently the first traces of a 365 day calendar with a leap year was in the Egyptian Empire which mimicked the solar calendar allowing them to keep their seasons on track. Fast forward about 3000 years and Julius Caesar of the Roman Empire became known for introducing the first leap year around 46 B.C.  However, the math behind his Julian calendar created too many leap years, so around 1500 years later the math was tweaked and the Gregorian calendar was introduced.

  • The ‘tradition’ of women proposing on Feb 29th is said to date back to an agreement made many centuries ago as a result of women complaining about waiting too long for their suitor to ‘pop the question’. According to Irish legend St Bridget struck a deal with St Patrick to “allow” women to propose to men on one special day every four years. Should that suitor reject this proposal penalties of money, a gown or 12 pairs of gloves were expected.  …Will we see any rings, bended knees or gloves?  – hmmm not sure this thinking has any place in 2024, but we’ll see!

  • There will be 8 years between leap years 2096 and 2104
