Geocache Description:

Christmas Traditions: Mari Lwyd

Mari Lwyd, pronounced like “Marie Lloyd” is a midwinter tradition from Wales. Around Christmas and New Year’s Eve, you may answer a knock at your door, and find a morbid white horse-headed figure, ready to challenge you to a battle of wits, though poetry. If you win, the horse bows in respect and leaves unless invited in. If you lose, you must invite the equine figure in for a festive snack and beverage, often cakes and ale.

The practice is pre-Christian in nature, and incorporates the centuries-old tradition of wassailing. Wassail, a sugary, spiced drink, was shared to bid someone good health. The price of a song could buy you a mug of the warm brew.
