Christmas Traditions: Karavaki
Karavaki, or Christmas Boat, is a long standing Greek tradition that celebrates the nautical nature of the regions history. The relationship between the people of Greece and the sea is celebrated by decorating boats instead of trees. Many believe that the tradition started as a way to thank Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, for protecting them while they worked out on the waters. Other’s believe that it was a way to honor loved ones parted from their families by their work on the sea.
The tradition fell out of fashion for a while but has been slowly making a comeback into the mainstream. Many city centers will include a festively decorated Karavaki in their holiday displays.
