The Muskegon River is a major river in the western portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan. The river source is located at Houghton Lake in Roscommon County flowing out of the North Bay into neighboring Missaukee County. The river passes through Clare, Osceola Mecosta, Newaygo, and finally Muskegon Counties. It empties into Muskegon Lake which connects by a channel to Lake Michigan. There is abundant wildlife, including otters, white-tailed deer, eagles, and many species of waterfowl. The river is a popular fishing destination. Migratory steelhead, and brown trout can be found as well as planted chinook salmon. Three major dams on the Muskegon River (the Rogers, Hardy and Croton) generate about 45,600 kilowatts of energy, with about 30,000 of that coming from the Hardy Dam.
