Conwy Castle, a medieval fortress nestled in the picturesque town of Conwy in North Wales, stands as a testament to medieval military architecture. Built by Edward I between 1283 and 1289 as part of his conquest of Wales, the castle was strategically positioned to control the Welsh and guard the entrance to the River Conwy. Its construction was a response to the unrest in the region, and the imposing structure served both as a military stronghold and a symbol of English dominance.

The castle's design is a marvel of military engineering. Surrounded by high curtain walls and fortified with eight massive towers, Conwy Castle boasts an impressive defensive system. The imposing gatehouse, guarded by two colossal towers, is a key feature, showcasing the architectural sophistication of the time. The castle's location by the water added an extra layer of protection, making it a formidable fortress.

Throughout history, Conwy Castle played a crucial role in various conflicts, including the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War. Its strategic importance waned over the centuries, leading to its neglect and decay. However, in the 19th century, there was a resurgence of interest in medieval architecture, and efforts were made to preserve and restore Conwy Castle, recognizing its significance as a historical treasure.

Today, Conwy Castle stands as one of the best-preserved and most awe-inspiring medieval fortresses in the United Kingdom. Its robust walls, towers, and commanding views of the surrounding landscape attract visitors from around the world. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Conwy Castle is not merely a relic of the past but a living testament to the medieval era's grandeur and the enduring legacy of historical preservation. Exploring its ramparts, chambers, and panoramic vistas offers a captivating journey through the pages of Welsh and English history.

One of the oldest roads in the state, Fort Road was originally built by the federal government after Fort Ridgely was completed in 1853-54. Supplies were shipped from Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux, then transported by wagon to Fort Ridgely.

Nicollet County Road 5 runs more than 42 miles from its eastern terminus at its intersection with US Highway 169 in St Peter to the Renville County line. Old Fort Road presumably extended from Traverse des Sioux, although the portion running through the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College has been blocked off. Fort Road as an address runs from the western edge of St Peter to the end of CR-5.

In an ideal world, a paved trail would have been installed when the road was refurbished in the early 2010s. This planned geocache trail will have to suffice, but won’t alleviate my anxiety when biking here.
