Fort Zachary Taylor, located in Key West, Florida, is a historic military fortress with a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. Construction of the fort began in 1845, and it was named after President Zachary Taylor, a military hero of the Mexican-American War. The fort played a significant role in various military engagements, including the Civil War, where it remained in Union control, helping to block Confederate access to the Gulf of Mexico.

Fort Zachary Taylor is known for its distinctive Civil War-era architecture, characterized by sturdy brick walls, gun emplacements, and a large central citadel. The fort's strategic position at the entrance to Key West's harbor made it a crucial defense point. Despite its military importance, Fort Zachary Taylor never saw direct combat, but it served as a deterrent and a symbol of Union strength.

Today, Fort Zachary Taylor is a popular tourist destination and state park, attracting visitors with its well-preserved architecture, scenic surroundings, and a beautiful beach. The site offers guided tours, showcasing the fort's history, military significance, and the role it played in shaping the region's past. Visitors can explore the fort's grounds, artillery, and museum to gain insight into Florida's military heritage and enjoy the coastal beauty that surrounds this historic landmark.

One of the oldest roads in the state, Fort Road was originally built by the federal government after Fort Ridgely was completed in 1853-54. Supplies were shipped from Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux, then transported by wagon to Fort Ridgely.

Nicollet County Road 5 runs more than 42 miles from its eastern terminus at its intersection with US Highway 169 in St Peter to the Renville County line. Old Fort Road presumably extended from Traverse des Sioux, although the portion running through the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College has been blocked off. Fort Road as an address runs from the western edge of St Peter to the end of CR-5.

In an ideal world, a paved trail would have been installed when the road was refurbished in the early 2010s. This planned geocache trail will have to suffice, but won’t alleviate my anxiety when biking here.
