Geocache Description:

Digitals Collections, University of South Carolina

Fort Jackson, located near Columbia, South Carolina, is one of the United States Army's most prominent and active training centers. Established in 1917, the base covers over 52,000 acres and serves as the primary site for Initial Entry Training (IET) for new Army recruits. Fort Jackson's mission is to transform civilians into disciplined, well-trained soldiers, providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful military service. The installation plays a crucial role in supporting the U.S. Army's overall readiness and maintaining a highly trained and motivated force.

Basic Combat Training (BCT) is a primary focus at Fort Jackson, where recruits undergo an intensive program that includes physical conditioning, marksmanship, tactical training, and leadership development. The base is also known for its commitment to fostering values such as integrity, loyalty, and duty among its trainees. In addition to BCT, Fort Jackson hosts Advanced Individual Training (AIT) for certain military occupational specialties, further refining soldiers' skills in their chosen fields.

----------

One of the oldest roads in the state, Fort Road was originally built by the federal government after Fort Ridgely was completed in 1853-54. Supplies were shipped from Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux, then transported by wagon to Fort Ridgely.

Nicollet County Road 5 runs more than 42 miles from its eastern terminus at its intersection with US Highway 169 in St Peter to the Renville County line. Old Fort Road presumably extended from Traverse des Sioux, although the portion running through the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College has been blocked off. Fort Road as an address runs from the western edge of St Peter to the end of CR-5.

In an ideal world, a paved trail would have been installed when the road was refurbished in the early 2010s. This planned geocache trail will have to suffice, but won’t alleviate my anxiety when biking here.
