Fort Mackinac is a historic military outpost situated on Mackinac Island in Michigan, USA. Established during the American Revolution in 1780 by the British, it played a crucial role in controlling strategic waterways during the fur trade era in the Great Lakes region. The fort changed hands multiple times between the British and Americans during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, eventually becoming a key outpost for the United States military.

The fort is well-known for its military architecture, including stone walls and historic buildings. It offers visitors a unique glimpse into the military history of the area through its well-preserved structures and artifacts. The site is managed as part of Mackinac Island State Park and serves as a living history museum, where interpreters in period clothing showcase daily life and military practices from the 19th century.

Fort Mackinac's strategic location provides panoramic views of the surrounding waters, making it an important defensive position during its active military years. The site is accessible by ferry and showcases not only military history but also offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of Mackinac Island and its historic charm.

Today, Fort Mackinac stands as a popular tourist destination, attracting history enthusiasts, families, and those interested in experiencing a well-preserved slice of America's military past. The fort's historical significance and picturesque setting contribute to its status as a key cultural and educational attraction in the Great Lakes region.

----------

One of the oldest roads in the state, Fort Road was originally built by the federal government after Fort Ridgely was completed in 1853-54. Supplies were shipped from Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux, then transported by wagon to Fort Ridgely.

Nicollet County Road 5 runs more than 42 miles from its eastern terminus at its intersection with US Highway 169 in St Peter to the Renville County line. Old Fort Road presumably extended from Traverse des Sioux, although the portion running through the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College has been blocked off. Fort Road as an address runs from the western edge of St Peter to the end of CR-5.

In an ideal world, a paved trail would have been installed when the road was refurbished in the early 2010s. This planned geocache trail will have to suffice, but won’t alleviate my anxiety when biking here.
