Cache In Trash Out (CITO) is an environmental initiative supported by the geocaching community. Since 2002, CITO has helped preserve the natural beauty of cache-friendly spaces. In that time, more than 363,000 people have volunteered at 18,000 CITO events.
Opportunity to clean up Maroochy River
Paddle by kayak and collect rubbish around our waterways. The plan will be to paddle along Maroochy River, staying along the shore to check rubbish caught in trees and bushes.
Where: Maroochy River.
When: 10:00 - 11:00 hr, Saturday 27/01/2024.
[Note: The CO will be present at the event location for the scheduled event duration.]
There will be an event logbook available to sign from the starting time (although noting that the Geocaching Guidelines do not require attendees to sign a logbook).
The planned area of the CITO clean-up, and suggested paddling route is as follows:

Garbage/trash bags will be supplied (thanks to Clean Up Australia).
Suggested items to bring:
- Boat/kayak, paddle;
- Life vest / PFD;
- Hat and/or sunglasses;
- Sunscreen;
- First aid kit;
- Insect repellent (there may be mosquitoes about - give preference to cream or roll-on that are more environmentally friendly than the spray);
- Gloves (for rubbish collection);
- Trash pick-up stick (optional / may be beneficial to reach rubbish from your watercraft that may be stuck in reeds or out-of-reach areas);
- Water, 2-3 litres (or more if it's a hot day); and
- Snacks, fruit, energy bars, etc.
Sunshine Coast Council has been notified of the proposed clean-up, and will collect rubbish at the disposal site upon completion of the CITO event.

Departure:
For those interested in joining me on the paddle to the Event, I plan to meet at the Dunethin Boat Ramp launch departure waypoint at 08:30 hr for a planned departure at 08:40 hr. The kayak distance is approximately 5 km before we commence in the clean-up area, and I am allowing 1:15 hr to kayak. If you believe that you need more time, then feel free to organise yourself accordingly.
I would like to be at the proposed CITO event location shortly afterwards, which is approximately 7 km from the Dunethin Boat Ramp waypoint.
I am then hoping to continue to kayak and clean as much of the Maroochy River as possible, to then ultimately return at Stoney Wharf Road location.
Note that high tide is at 09:14 hr, so the event should be under a downstream current. There are multiple boat ramp options that you may wish to launch from, to then meet myself and the group within the proposed clean-up area.
