Fort Mandan holds historical significance as the winter home of the Lewis and Clark Expedition during 1804-1805. Located near present-day Washburn, North Dakota, the fort was named after the local Mandan Native American tribe. Lewis and Clark, along with the Corps of Discovery, constructed Fort Mandan to establish winter quarters during their westward exploration commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson.

During the winter of 1804-1805, the expedition faced the harsh conditions of the Northern Plains, but Fort Mandan provided a sheltered and strategic base for the explorers. The fort served as a crucial center for diplomatic and trade relations with the Mandan, Arikara, and Hidatsa tribes in the area. The interactions with these Native American communities were instrumental in the success of the expedition, as they provided vital information about the landscape, climate, and potential challenges the explorers might face on their journey to the Pacific Ocean.

Fort Mandan played a pivotal role in the scientific and cultural mission of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The explorers spent their time at the fort studying and documenting the local flora and fauna, engaging in diplomacy with the Native American tribes, and preparing for the next leg of their journey. It is believed they met Sacagawea here, as her husband was a Hidatsa interpreter. Their son may have been born here.

The original fort burned to the ground by the time the expedition returned on their way east. Since then, the Missouri River has slowly eroded the bank and the original site is believed to be under water. A reconstructed Fort Mandan nearby stands as a living history site, offering visitors a glimpse into the challenges and experiences of the Lewis and Clark Expedition during that crucial winter encampment.

----------

One of the oldest roads in the state, Fort Road was originally built by the federal government after Fort Ridgely was completed in 1853-54. Supplies were shipped from Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux, then transported by wagon to Fort Ridgely.

Nicollet County Road 5 runs more than 42 miles from its eastern terminus at its intersection with US Highway 169 in St Peter to the Renville County line. Old Fort Road presumably extended from Traverse des Sioux, although the portion running through the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College has been blocked off. Fort Road as an address runs from the western edge of St Peter to the end of CR-5.

In an ideal world, a paved trail would have been installed when the road was refurbished in the early 2010s. This planned geocache trail will have to suffice, but won’t alleviate my anxiety when biking here.
