Fort Michilimackinac, located in Mackinaw City, Michigan, is a historic military outpost with roots dating back to the 18th century. Originally built by the French in 1715, the fort served as a key trading and military center in the Great Lakes region. Its strategic location at the confluence of Lakes Michigan and Huron made it a vital hub for fur trade and a gateway to the western interior.

In 1761, during the French and Indian War, the British gained control of Fort Michilimackinac. The fort continued to play a crucial role in the fur trade under British rule, attracting traders and Native American communities to its vicinity. In 1763, during Pontiac's Rebellion, Native American forces successfully captured the fort from the British in a surprise attack.

The British regained control in 1764 and subsequently built Fort Mackinac on nearby Mackinac Island, considering it a more defensible position. Fort Michilimackinac was then partially dismantled. Today, the site is a living history museum, where visitors can explore reconstructed buildings and experience demonstrations of daily life in the 18th century, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the fur trade, Native American interactions, and military dynamics in the Great Lakes region during the colonial period.

----------

One of the oldest roads in the state, Fort Road was originally built by the federal government after Fort Ridgely was completed in 1853-54. Supplies were shipped from Fort Snelling to Traverse des Sioux, then transported by wagon to Fort Ridgely.

Nicollet County Road 5 runs more than 42 miles from its eastern terminus at its intersection with US Highway 169 in St Peter to the Renville County line. Old Fort Road presumably extended from Traverse des Sioux, although the portion running through the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College has been blocked off. Fort Road as an address runs from the western edge of St Peter to the end of CR-5.

In an ideal world, a paved trail would have been installed when the road was refurbished in the early 2010s. This planned geocache trail will have to suffice, but won’t alleviate my anxiety when biking here.
