Sunrise in Christchurch on New Year's Day 2024 is at 5.51am.
GZ is at the end of the New Brighton Pier - remember it is 300 metres long, so allow a few minutes to walk the length of the Pier to arrive in time to see the sun rise.
The new New Brighton Pier was opened in 1997, after 30 years of lobbying and fundraising by the local community. It is the site of the annual Guy Fawkes fireworks display and, since June 2021, the venue for the fireworks to celebrate Matariki.
The New Brighton Library was opened in 1999 and is a great place to spend a cold day, with its stunning view & welcoming atmosphere. There is also a cafe at the townside of the Pier. The Library and Cafe won't be open at the time of this Event!.
The old, wooden Pier was opened in 1894 and was a recreational destination for 70 years, complementing New Brighton's role as a favourite seaside outing and as the only place where shops were permitted to open n Saturdays. By 1965 it had become so run down that the City Council ordered its demolition.
