Cerro Toco

Cerro Toco

Erosion and weathering at Cerro Toco
Cerro Toco is a stratovolcano. It is located on the northeastern end of the Purico Complex, a pyroclastic shield consisting of several stratovolcanoes, lava domes and a maar. In terms of geological history, Cerro Toco is not that old. The entire Purico complex is a Pleistocene volcanic complex. The Pleistocene is the geological epoch that lasted from c. 2.58 million to 11,700 years ago. Thus, the Pleistocene lasted about 2.5 million years. During the ice ages, the shield was partially covered by glaciers that left moraines. Because the Andes Mountains reach such great heights, they are of course exposed to constant erosion and weathering of the rocks.
The difference between erosion and weathering
Erosion is when weathered material on the Earth's surface is removed by the movement of water, wind, gravity or ice, while weathering is when rocks and minerals undergo decomposition, transformation or destruction due to exogenous forces.
weathering
We differentiate:
Physical weathering
a) Temperature fluctuations
The constant change in temperature between day and night or between seasons destroys the structure in the rock
b) Frost blasting
At temperatures just above the freezing point of the water, the liquid water can penetrate into the smallest cracks and crevices in the rocks. If the temperature then drops below 0 °C, the water freezes, expands and bursts the cracks. This also destroys the rock structure.
c) Root blasting
Shrub and tree roots grow into small cracks in the rock. As the tree grows, the roots also grow and become so strong that they can shatter rocks.
Chemical weathering
Chemical reactions can change and dissolve rock. Almost all of these processes take place with the participation of water.
Biogenic weathering
Roots of small plants or trees secrete organic acids that attack and cause rock to weather. In contrast to physical weathering, root pressure is not the cause here.
Even dying plants release acids as they rot, which causes the stones to disintegrate.
Erosion
We differentiate:
fluviatile erosion Erosion caused by water
Glacial erosion Erosion by glaciers
Abrasion marine erosion
aeolian erosion wind erosion
Your task:
Look around at two waypoints and at the summit and describe the forces of erosion and weathering that shaped the surface there:
Task 1 WP1 What form of erosion shaped the surface here?
Task 2 WP2 On the way to the summit you see an amazing rock formation. What do you see there? a = small cave, b = small rock column, c = conspicuously large, round rock
3 GZ At the summit you will find many stones. Look at the shape of the stones (edged or rounded). How do you explain the large number of stones and the shape?
Task 4 Another log condition is a photo at the summit with the Licancabur volcano in the background The questions are easy to answer through observation, reflection and reading the listing. After sending the answers to my profile you can log immediately.
!!!Danger!!! The summit of Cerro Toco is at 5604 m. It is strongly advisable to acclimatize at altitude beforehand. It is also advisable to climb the mountain with a mountain guide. !!!Danger!!!

Cerro Toco

Verwitterung
Wir unterscheiden:
Physikalische Verwitterung
a) Temperaturschwankungen
c) Wurzelsprengung
Erosion
Wir unterscheiden:
fluviatile Erosion Erosion durch Wasser
glaziale Erosion Erosion durch Gletscher
Abrasion marine Erosion
äolische Erosion Winderosion
