Geocache Description:

Welcome to the very ancient church of St Martin's. The cache is not at the church.  You need to collect some information at the church to work out the coordinates of the cache. Put the calculated cordinates into your device as a new waypoint and naviagte to it. There is a coordinate checker below

There has been a church on this site since at least 1203 although this building replaces an earlier church that was nearly totally destroyed by fire in 1480.  Rescued was the font and some stained glass that are inside for you to see today.  You will also want to go inside to see the East Window most of which dates back to the 15C and a picture of the Virgin Mary dating back to 1260.  There is very little glass older than this anywhere in Britain.

Also of interest in the window is the coat of arms of the Washington family who had lands near Warton in Lancashire in the 1400s and from whom George Washington, the first President of the USA is descended. Washington descendants often make the pilgrimage to visit this church and their coat of arms which has been suggested, but not proven, to be the origin of the stars and stripes US flag.  Their coat of arms is red and white in the third window along from the left, at the top below the very old Virgin Mary.

The church is generally open to visitors on weekday mornings.  Its well worth timing your visit to go into the church.

To find the cache you need to do some simple sums with dates from the top of drainpipes.

1) Stand facing front door and note the date on the top of the drain pipes on either side. That will be ABCD.

2) Then go round the church to the right, past the Grade 2 listed grave of the Abyssinian slave boy,  Rasselas Belfield who died in 1822,  to find the date at the top of the drain pipe in the far corner.  AFAA

The cache is a short walk away at:- N54 21 B (C - A) (5xA)   W2  55. D F (C-A) . Enter this as a new waypoint in your app / device.
