Geocache Description:

A simple cache to show you this historic place.

Watch out when parking as parking wardens who frequent the area. You can usually park close to the cache for a quick find but don't forget to have a look at the plaque too. You may need tweezers.

the find should be fine for kids, pushchairs, bikes and wheelchair users.

The plaque, high up  on the house across the road reads "On the site behind this house stood until 1902 Broomwood  House (formerly Broomfield House) where WILLIAM  WILBERFORCE resided during the CAMPAIGN against SLAVERY which he successfully conducted in Parliament".

From 1792 until 1797 Wilberforce lived nearby at Battersea Rise – the home of fellow Saint, the banker Henry Thornton (1760–1815), and the principal base for the Clapham Sect. Wilberforce later moved here to Broomwood Road on the west side of Clapham Common.

Wilberforce also advocated legislation to improve the working conditions for chimney-sweeps and textile workers, engaged in prison reform, and supported campaigns to restrict capital punishment and the severe punishments meted out under the Game LawsHe recognised the importance of education in alleviating poverty, and when his sister established Sunday Schools for the poor in Somerset he provided financial and moral support as they faced opposition from landowners and Anglican clergy. From the late 1780s onward, Wilberforce campaigned for limited parliamentary reform, such as the abolition of rotten boroughs and the redistribution of Commons seats to growing towns and cities, though by 1832, he feared that such measures went too far. With others, Wilberforce founded the world's first animal welfare organisation, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
