Center for Blind Children in Laski
Located at the eastern edge of Kampinos Forest, Laski is renowned for the Center for Blind Children, where the Franciscan Sisters Servants of the Cross and lay specialists assist blind children in their daily functioning and strive to foster their independence in life. Within the local chapel lies the tomb with a wooden sarcophagus of the founder of this place – Blessed Elżbieta Róża Czacka, and a few meters away – the Museum / Chamber of Memory of Mother Czacka, where visitors can see archival photos and items belonging to the blessed.
The story of the center begins in 1922, when Matka Czacka receives several mores of land in Laski as a donation from the Daszewski Family. Construction starts, facilities for blind children are moved there. The complex grows, in 10 years from one building for 30 people to 10 buildings housing 300 people and 8 auxiliary buildings.
During the September campaign in 1939 the center became a battleground. The personnel engaged in developing the facility helped out by running a field hospital, despite the material losses of the center reaching 75%. During the war officially the work of the center was suspended, and the pupils were moved to Żułów.
In 1944, Mother Elżbieta Czacka decided to aid the Warsaw Uprising. In Laski, field hospitals were established, weapons and provisions were stored. The Center was also a place for relaying orders, reports, and any information useful to the insurgents.
During the uprising, the chaplain of the sisters in Laski and the AK Kampinos Group was Father Stefan Wyszyński, later the Primate of Poland. His service was not typical for a military chaplain. In addition to religious duties, the priest bandaged wounds, darned uniforms, assisted in surgeries, and carried wounded soldiers from the battlefield. Despite the horrific wartime experiences, he maintained a strong attachment to Laski and visited the place until the end of his life.
After WWII the center was rebuilt, new workshop, preschool and boarding school buildings were created, along with a “House of the friends of the blind”. The center become a modern facility educating visually impaired pupils.
