Geocache Description:

- The Tokeh Island -

There is a basalt island in front of the village of Tokeh, with abandoned buildings on it. The island's rocky subsoil has withstood the waves of the ocean for centuries. Deposits called sediments can be found on the island's beaches.

Sediments are various mineral (inorganic) and/or organic loose materials that - after a shorter or longer transport by gravity or a flowing medium - are deposited on dry land or at the bottom of a body of water. Sedimentary rocks, depositional rocks or stratified rocks are more or less solid rocks that emerged from such sediments through diagenesis over geological periods.

There are different ways to describe or identify sediments. In addition to color and appearance, size is a defining characteristic.
Granulometry is used to determine the size. Granulometric classification or granulometry means the classification of the grains and measurement of the particles of the sediment materials and determination of the mechanical properties using the granulometric scale.

A scientific determination of the sediment parts and their measurement is difficult for a layperson without the appropriate tools. Technically, the determination can be carried out using a laser granulometer or a gamma OBS. A simpler granulometric determination method is to sieve the particles through a series of meshes of different grid widths (like sieves). Depending on the mesh size, the remaining parts in the sieve are determined in size. Sieves arranged one above the other are called sieve columns. The weight is then determined by weighing.

Additional determination of color and shape allows the sediments to be classified. The diversity of the classified sediments provides information about the nature and geological peculiarities of the observation area and also about its history.

To log the cache, please answer the following questions via email:
A) Describe the shape and color of the sediments you find on the island's beach.
B) Determine the sediments using the Wentworth scale.
C) Examine the sediments carefully and determine whether they are monominerals (made up of only one type of material) or multiminerals (made up of more than one type of material).
D) Are there any layers of sediment? How do you determine the difference?
E) Describe how and where sediment deposits are located on the island.
F) Please take a photo of yourself or a piece of paper with your name and the "Monkey Tree" in the background without the sediment deposits (rock is okay). Add the photo to your log. Photos that serve as spoilers will be deleted without notice.

Logs without sent answers and/or photos will be deleted without prior notice.
